Inspect Condition Beyond the Exterior

Used industrial machinery should be assessed on operating condition, not appearance. Stainless surfaces and clean guarding are positive signs, but they do not confirm accuracy, repeatability, or maintenance history.

When evaluating a used Vemag I-Robot machine, review available run history and maintenance records. Look for evidence of regular service, replacement of wear components, electrical repairs, control updates, and prior modifications. Determine why the machine was removed from service. Confirm Line Compatibility Early

Integration is where used-equipment projects often succeed or fail. The machine may be mechanically sound yet still require costly work to match conveyor elevations, product flow, controls signals, guarding boundaries, utilities, and available space.

Start with a simple line-layout review. Confirm the machine footprint, service access, infeed and discharge heights, operator stations, and clearance for maintenance. Measure the actual installation area rather than relying on an old layout. Existing facilities often have columns, drains, doors, utilities, and traffic paths that affect placement.

Then review utilities. Electrical requirements, compressed air demand, vacuum needs, washdown conditions, and network connections should all be known before shipment. A voltage mismatch or insufficient air capacity can be solved, but it should be budgeted and scheduled rather than discovered at startup.

Upstream and downstream timing must also be addressed. If the I-Robot system is feeding a packaging machine, its output must match the packer’s operating rhythm, buffer capacity, and fault-handling logic. If it receives product from a portioning or forming system, product presentation must be stable enough for reliable handling. A line is only as productive as its least coordinated transfer point.

Budget for the Whole Project

The purchase price is only one part of the cost. A realistic used-equipment budget includes inspection, crating, freight, customs where applicable, rigging, installation, controls integration, replacement wear parts, format tooling, commissioning, and operator training.

This does not mean used machinery lacks value. It means value should be measured against total installed cost and time to production. A properly matched used Vemag system can offer substantial savings compared with new equipment, especially when the required configuration is available and the line can accommodate it with limited modification.

Avoid treating missing parts as minor details. One unavailable servo drive, proprietary tool, electrical drawing, or guarding section can delay startup far longer than expected. That scope gives procurement and operations teams a more reliable approval basis.

Documentation and Parts Support Matter

Documentation reduces uncertainty. Request machine manuals, electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, parts lists, software backups where available, and records of major service work. Even incomplete documentation is useful if it identifies the installed components and machine serial information.

Parts availability should be reviewed against the machine’s actual configuration. Standard electrical and pneumatic components may be readily sourced, while application-specific tooling and older proprietary assemblies can require more planning. Maintenance teams should know which consumables and critical spares to keep on hand before the machine enters regular production.

The same principle applies to technical support. Consider who will install the unit, connect it to the line, validate safety functions, and respond if an issue appears during startup. Internal capability may be sufficient for a straightforward move. A more complex integration may justify external controls, mechanical, or OEM-related support.

Buy for Fit, Not Just Availability
