Texwrap equipment is widely recognized in high-speed shrink packaging applications. For plants moving packaged food, consumer goods, personal-care products, printed materials, or industrial items, a properly selected side seal system can provide consistent package appearance and dependable throughput at a lower acquisition cost than new equipment. What a Texwrap Side Seal System Does

A Texwrap side seal system forms and seals shrink film around products as they move continuously through the wrapper. Rather than stopping the product for each sealing cycle, side seal technology is designed for efficient, continuous-motion packaging. Start With Product and Production Requirements

The right machine begins with the product envelope. Before reviewing an available system, establish the maximum and minimum product length, width, and height, along with the expected package orientation. A machine that handles one current SKU may not have the flexibility needed for planned product changes or seasonal formats.

Throughput matters just as much. State the required packages per minute, but also identify the normal operating rate and the peak rate. A system rated for a high theoretical speed may not achieve that output with unstable products, inconsistent upstream spacing, frequent size changes, or demanding film materials. Buyers should size equipment around sustained production, not the best number shown in a brochure.

Consider the operating conditions as well. Food and pharmaceutical plants may require particular guarding, material finishes, documentation, electrical standards, or cleaning access. A consumer goods line may place greater emphasis on frequent changeovers and print registration. Industrial applications may need stronger film, larger package capacity, or product handling built for heavier loads.

A clear requirement sheet prevents wasted time. It should cover product dimensions, target speeds, film type and width, existing conveyor elevations, power requirements, available floor space, and any integration needs involving infeed systems, shrink tunnels, labelers, printers, or case packers.

Evaluate the Machine Beyond Its Age

Year of manufacture is useful, but it is not a complete condition report. A well-maintained machine that ran one shift on a stable product can be a stronger candidate than a newer wrapper that experienced heavy use, poor film control, or deferred maintenance.

Start with the mechanical condition. Inspect the infeed conveyor, lug or flighted product handling components where applicable, side-seal assembly, cross-seal mechanism, drive system, chains, belts, bearings, rollers, and guarding. Wear at sealing and transport components can show up as unstable packages, film tracking problems, or inconsistent output.

The sealing system deserves close attention. Ask whether the side-seal and cross-seal components have been replaced, rebuilt, or serviced. Examine the condition of sealing wires, bands, coatings, brushes, knives, springs, and temperature-control components. A machine can appear clean while carrying worn parts that affect seal integrity at production speed.

Controls also need practical review. Identify the PLC, operator interface, variable-frequency drives, sensors, safety circuits, and servo components used on the machine. Established controls platforms can make long-term maintenance easier, but the real question is whether the equipment is functional, supported, and appropriate for your plant’s service capability.

Confirm Film Compatibility and Package Quality

A side seal system must be matched to the film your operation intends to run. Polyolefin, polyethylene, and specialty films behave differently under tension, heat, and speed. Film width, gauge, roll diameter, core size, and unwind configuration must all align with the machine.

Film tracking is especially important. Poor tracking can create wandering seals, wrinkled packages, uneven trim, film breaks, and unnecessary waste. Review the film unwind, dancer or tension-control components, rollers, forming area, and trim-removal arrangement. If the equipment is available for inspection or test running, use representative film and product whenever possible.

Package appearance is not merely cosmetic. Weak or inconsistent seals can affect product protection, retail presentation, and customer acceptance. Evaluate seal placement, overlap, trim quality, film tension, and the consistency of the finished pack across a realistic speed range. If a shrink tunnel is included, inspect its conveyor, airflow, heating zones, insulation, controls, and overall temperature consistency.

Integration Is Where Many Used-Machinery Projects Stall

A wrapper can be mechanically sound and still fail to deliver value if it does not communicate or physically connect with the line around it. Infeed timing is the first concern. Products must arrive at the correct orientation, pitch, and elevation. Existing upstream equipment may need metering conveyors, accumulation, side guides, or transfer modifications to feed the wrapper consistently.

Downstream handling requires the same attention. Wrapped products must move through the shrink tunnel and into packing, inspection, or palletizing equipment without scuffing, tipping, or loss of spacing. Confirm conveyor height, travel direction, product discharge position, available accumulation, and access for operators and maintenance staff.

Electrical integration should be defined early. Confirm voltage, phase, frequency, air requirements, control interfaces, safety expectations, and line-stop logic. For equipment moving between Canada and the United States, electrical configuration and compliance requirements should be reviewed before shipment, not during installation.

Floor layout matters too. Measure the complete footprint, including film-roll loading space, access around electrical panels, guarding swing areas, tunnel length, and maintenance clearance. Ask the Questions That Reduce Risk

Used packaging equipment should be purchased against evidence. Request the model and serial number, approximate operating history, available manuals, electrical drawings, spare-parts information, and a list of included accessories. Determine whether the system includes infeed conveyors, discharge conveyors, a shrink tunnel, film unwind assemblies, product-handling change parts, and any controls cabinets.

When possible, verify the machine under power. A test run does more than confirm that motors turn on. It provides an opportunity to observe film tracking, sealing performance, sensor behavior, product transfer, noise, vibration, and operator controls. If a live production test is not possible, documented inspection findings and clear condition reporting become more important.

Also ask what is not included. Installation, commissioning, guarding modifications, freight, rigging, electrical work, change parts, replacement wear parts, and controls upgrades can materially change the project budget. A lower purchase price is only a savings if the total installed cost still supports the business case.

When a Used System Is the Right Decision

A used Texwrap side seal system is often a strong fit when a plant needs proven shrink-wrap capacity without the cost and lead time of new equipment. It can be particularly effective for established package formats, known film specifications, and lines where the operating team already understands shrink packaging.

It may be less suitable when the application requires unusually broad size ranges, complex automation, advanced data integration, or a highly customized sanitary design.
